Dr. Cooke's
The Amputation Set
Handed down over four generations, Dr. Cooke's descendants had in their possession his complete amputation set.  The metal instruments were stamped "Simpson 16 Strand".

Robert Simpson, who manufactured amputation sets from 1803-1822, was located at 16 Strand Street in London, England.  During this time, there was a trend where young men from the United States traveled to Scotland for medical training.  It is speculative that Dr. Cooke may have gone to Scotland and on his return to the United States, via London, purchased this set.

Dr. Cooke's original Simpson Amputation Set is on loan from the Cooke Family descendants to the Holmdel Historical Society, and is on display during tours of Dr. Cooke's Medical Building.
