A Mayor's job is to oversee a city's main departments, including the police, fire, education, housing and transportation departments. A mayor is the elected leader of a municipal government. The mayor is the chief executive officer of a city.
The Mayor's power is to direct the administrative structure, appointing and removing of all department heads. While the council has legislative power, the mayor has veto power. The council does not oversee the daily operations.
