February 7th, 2017 Meeting

  The Group with Glen Harbour

Guest Speaker - Glen Harbour

The speaker for the evening was Glenn Harbour. He grew up in the Old Manor section of Holmdel. He had a very interesting talk on how he discovered artifacts and bones of ancient animals in streams in and around home Holmdel

Parts of a skull of an Ice Age baby Mastodon were found in Hop Brook, Holmdel. Remarkably the bones he found were in great shape. He estimated the animal was about 11,000 years old, and came from the Ice Age (about 15,000 – 11,000BC). He donated it to the Trenton State Museum as it would be more appropriate to have it there. It could be easier to have it viewed by the public.

He found many artifacts in the Holmdel area. The best spot in Holmdel is Hop Brook. There was plenty of water that passed over the bones that were buried in shallow spots of the brook bed. Over the years the water loosened the bones, which became visible when he looked carefully at the brook bed.

He found a lot of argylite which was use for points for hunting. The Ice Age hunters made various styles of points from the argylite that they used for different types of hunting. He had a number of different, very interesting, examples of the points.

An article on Glen’s amazing discoveries can be found in the American Digger Magazine, 2014 Sampler pages 70 – 73.
